Peace in EDHA: NAWOJ President commends immediate past Speaker

THE National President, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs. Ifeyinwa Omowole, has reacted to the recent development in the Edo State House of Assembly. Yesterday the former speaker, Rt. Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie stepped down for a new speaker, Dr. Justin Okonobo, describing Mrs. Ativie action as victory for democracy.

In a release signed by the president, and released to newsmen yesterday, the president applauded the decision of the first female speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, to relinquish her position to become elected as deputy speaker, and described the development as “…. History well made, a celebrated act of uncommon love and courage done in the interest of peace and development.”

The NAWOJ Boss commended Ativie for her unusual character, for not allowing selfish interest becould sense of good judgement, which according to the first female journalists in Nigeria, is the known norm in orchestrating political equations and defining personal attainments.

“By this singular action, Ativie has set an uncommon standard, laid down a procedural precedent for others to emulate and made womanhood proud. She has defined the margin and extent of political aspirations for not just Edo State but Nigeria as well. She should be celebrated.”

Omouole called on both men and women in political and other leadership positions to learn vital lessons in leadership from the stance of a woman who gave up a collected position in order for a state not to burn.

“What Ativie did would go down the annals to political history of the nation and would be a clear reminder that the collective good, peace, unity and development of Nigeria supercedes personal wishes and aspirations of any single individual.

While congratulating her for taking this bold and selfless step, we are proud to identify with her on this epoch making moment of history and urge her to continue pursuing vigorously the march towards a peaceful transition in Edo State even as a Deputy Speaker” she said.
